We place 2 to 3 tablespoons of oil in a suitable pot over the heat.

We add a large sliced onion and sauté it for 5 minutes until it becomes slightly yellow.

We add the tomatoes, carrots, and garlic, and sauté them with the onion for 2–3 minutes.

We add the yellow lentils and sauté them with the vegetables for another 2–3 minutes.

We add enough water to cover the vegetables completely and leave the mixture over medium heat until all the vegetables are fully cooked.

We add more water or broth as needed to reach the desired consistency.

We leave the soup to cool slightly, then blend it using a blender or hand blender until smooth.

We add the salt, cumin, and black pepper, and mix them well with the hand blender.

We return the soup to the heat and let it boil for 5 minutes.

We add the rice and stir continuously for 5 minutes to prevent sticking.

When the soup begins to boil, we turn off the heat and cover the pot so the rice finishes cooking with the steam.
