Ingredients

  • 0.5CupDried hibiscus flowers
  • 2Cupwater
  • 2CupSugar

Steps

  1. 1

We wash the hibiscus petals thoroughly under running water and rinse them two to three times to remove any dust or impurities.

  2. 2

We place the hibiscus in a pot and add about 1 liter of clean water, enough to fully cover the petals.

  3. 3

We put the pot on the stove for 5 minutes only—not to boil, just to sterilize it. As soon as the water gets hot, we remove it from the heat.

  4. 4

We let the hibiscus steep in the hot water for 3 to 4 hours, or preferably overnight, for a more concentrated flavor.

  5. 5

After the first steep, we strain the concentrated hibiscus drink and store it in freezer-safe bags, ice cube trays, or small containers.

  6. 6

To make regular hibiscus drink, we add another liter of water to the leftover petals from the first soak and let it steep for 1 to 1.5 hours.

  7. 7

We strain the second, lighter hibiscus drink and sweeten it to taste. It can be served immediately.

  8. 8

To prepare a glass of concentrated hibiscus, we take a frozen hibiscus cube, place it in a cup of water, add sugar to taste, and stir until dissolved.
